Alums Lexie Roberts, Taylor Apple receive season sofball honors

Clover Garden alum Lexie Roberts of Mebane was named Player of the Year in the Big South Conference for softball during her sophomore season for Radford.

Roberts, an outfielder, batted a league-leading .413, including .475 in conference play.

She was a first-team all-conference selection and on the conference’s all-academic list.

Of Roberts’ 62 hits, 55 were singles. She had five triples and two doubles.

Roberts had Big South Conference highs with 38 runs scored and in triples. She led Radford with 29 stolen bases.

She was the first Radford player in 12 years to be named Player of the Year in softball.

The Highlanders finished with a 24-23 record.


Apple posts strong first season

East Carolina freshman pitcher Taylor Apple out of Western Alamance was named to the American Athletic Conference all-rookie team.

Apple was the Pirates’ top pitcher. She posted a team-best 2.62 earned run average in 39 appearances, including 26 starts.

Apple’s 14-8 record came with 106 strikeouts in 157 2/3 innings. She walked 66 batters. Twice, she was listed on the AAC weekly honor roll.

East Carolina was the No. 7 seed in the AAC Tournament, reaching the second round before the season ended last month in Wichita, Kansas.

The Pirates finished with a 38-19 overall record.
