The board of commissioners went into closed session for roughly 15 minutes on Monday to discuss the purchase two parcels along South Maple Street in Graham from attorney Todd Allen Smith.
This property, at 106 South Maple Street, is now home to several lawyers’ offices (Parcel IDs: 145809 and 145819), including Smith’s (Smith & Giles), and would be used by the county for office space.
Previously, county attorney Rik Stevens had alluded to the possibility that the office space might be used either for a public defender’s office or the county’s fifth district court judge; both positions were recently authorized in the current state budget.
After they emerged from the closed session, the commissioners agreed (by a unanimous vote of 5-to-0) to draw no more than $1.2 million from the county’s capital reserves to acquire the two parcels. The tax valuation on the property is $1.4 million.
