Dorothy (Dot) Stanley McGoogan

Dorothy S. McGoogan passed away peacefully at AuthoraCare Hospice Home on Monday, August 5, 2024. Dot was born on July 27, 1936 in Four Oaks, NC to the late Roby M. Stanley and Wilma Stewart Stanley.

Dot graduated from Woman’s College (now UNC Greensboro) in 1958 and began work as a home economics teacher in St. Pauls, NC. That year, she met Charles McGoogan, and they were married in 1962. They would have celebrated their 62nd anniversary later this month. Dot worked 25 years in public education and retired from Western Alamance Middle School in 1994.

The family cherishes many happy memories from time spent together at the beach on Topsail Island. Dot was an excellent cook and enjoyed sewing and needlecraft.

Dot is survived by her husband Charles, three daughters, Jean Pittard (Mike), Lynn Hawkins (Mark), and Anne Vann (Tim), and six grandchildren, Drew Pittard, Matthew Hawkins, Sarah Pittard, Megan Hawkins, Ashley Vann and Kelly Vann. She is also survived by one sister, Carolyn Cheek, and she was preceded in death by her sister Thelma Stanley.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 10th at St. Mark’s Community Church, in the original sanctuary, officiated by Rev. Robert Disher. A reception and visitation will be held immediately following the service. A private burial will be held at St. Mark’s Community Church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to St. Mark’s Community Church, AuthoraCare Hospice of Alamance, or a charity of choice.
