UNC Asheville’s Cole McGinnis, an Eastern Alamance alum, homered against reigning national champion Tennessee in Tuesday’s college baseball game at Knoxville, Tennessee.
The first career homer for McGinnis, a sophomore catcher, was a three-run shot to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead in the second inning. Tennessee went on to win 29-4.

McGinnis also had a hit and scored a run as part of UNC Asheville’s season-opening three-game sweep of visiting Fairleigh Dickinson last week.
Elon wins first

In the first game, Elon starting pitcher Justin Mitrovich worked five shutout innings and Alex Duffey’s two-run double gave the Phoenix a 2-0 lead in the sixth.
Elon is slated for a home series Friday through Sunday vs. Binghamton.
