Eastern alum Cole McGinnis homers vs. 2024 champs

UNC Asheville’s Cole McGinnis, an Eastern Alamance alum, homered against reigning national champion Tennessee in Tuesday’s college baseball game at Knoxville, Tennessee.

The first career homer for McGinnis, a sophomore catcher, was a three-run shot to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead in the second inning. Tennessee went on to win 29-4.

McGinnis also had a hit and scored a run as part of UNC Asheville’s season-opening three-game sweep of visiting Fairleigh Dickinson last week.

 

Elon wins first

Tank Yaghoubi drove in four runs and Jackson Alford had three hits and scored four runs as Elon smashed Presbyterian 16-3 in its home opener Tuesday at Latham Park. Ryan Sprock and Will Vergantino each scored three times.

Elon opened the season with losses by 4-2, 16-6 and 12-6 to No. 1-ranked Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.

In the first game, Elon starting pitcher Justin Mitrovich worked five shutout innings and Alex Duffey’s two-run double gave the Phoenix a 2-0 lead in the sixth.

Elon is slated for a home series Friday through Sunday vs. Binghamton.
