Eastern knocked out of softball state playoffs

Southern Nash knocked off visiting Eastern Alamance 5-2 in the East Region’s third round in last Thursday’s twice-postponed game.

The top-seeded Firebirds led 5-0 through five innings before the eighth-seeded Eagles scored twice in the seventh on Kayden Manning’s home run.

Eagles pitcher Delani Straughan gave up seven hits and issued three walks while striking out two.

Eastern, the Central 3-A Conference champion, finished the season with a 19-8 record. The next night, Southern Nash (25-1) suffered its only loss of the season with a 5-0 setback to fifth-seeded South Johnston.
