John Somers can say he beat Tiger Woods in a golf tournament.

Somers, formerly of Elon and a college golfer for his hometown team, played in the PGA Championship last week, missing the cut with a two-round score of 6-over-par 148 to tie for 130th.

That put him one shot ahead of Woods, who was in a tie for 133rd at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

So anyone looking for Woods’ name on the score list might have come across Somers, who was listed right ahead of the world’s most famous golfer. Somers is the head golf professional at Southern Hills Plantation Club in Brooksville, Florida.

Somers, who played in the PGA Championship for the second year in a row, shot rounds of 76 and 72. He had four birdies on the backside in the second round.

Somers, 32, is a Bartlett Yancey High School graduate. He was Elon’s top golfer in 2013 and 2014.
