A crew from the Seward Johnson Atelier will arrive to dismantle the Embracing Peace statue on Tuesday, August 16.
Before that day, Alamance Arts will host a going-away celebration commemorating the time the statue has spent as a community staple for the city of Graham.
The event, open to the public, will be Thursday, August 11, 6:00-8:00 p.m. At 25 feet tall Embracing Peace celebrates the famous 1945 sailor and nurse photograph taken in Times Square, NYC, at the moment the end of World War II was announced.
The statue arrived in October of 2019 and was originally scheduled for a six-month installation. Due to Covid restrictions, however, the statue has stayed for nearly three years.
