Former Western Alamance football coach Jeff Snuffer won’t skip a season on the high school football sidelines.
Snuffer has joined the coaching staff at High Point Christian.
This comes several months after stepping down at Western following 16 seasons as head coach and 34 years overall with the football program.
“I knew I was going to be coaching somewhere, I just didn’t know where,” Snuffer said. “It has been a blessing that this door has opened. It really worked out.”
Snuffer will be the receivers coach on head coach Ryan Rocha’s staff. He’ll also assist with the linebackers and have a role with special teams.
Next month, he’ll also have a teaching role at the school with physical education/weight-lifting classes.
“I wanted to not be a head coach but still coach,” Snuffer said. “I was just ready for something like this.”
He said he hasn’t ruled out becoming a head coach again, but the situation at High Point Christian was the type of role he thought would be ideal.
Snuffer, whose coaching record at Western was 140-59-1 with five outright and one shared conference championships, said he explored some opportunities in Virginia and West Virginia, but he wanted to avoid moving. He lives in Whitsett.
Snuffer, 58, reconnected with Sam Beasley, who was on Western’s football staff more than two decades ago and has held a variety of roles at High Point Christian. That helped start the process of landing his next coaching assignment.
Snuffer said that since retiring at the end of January from his teaching position at Western that he’s enjoying family time.
Snuffer’s work at High Point Christian kicked into gear in April when he did some substitute teaching and bus driving.
High Point Christian is the reigning state champion in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association’s Division II. Three players from that team moved on to Division I college programs.
“There’s more talent than I thought,” Snuffer said.
The team plays home games at High Point Athletic Complex.
The Cougars, who finished with a 12-0 record last year, open their season Aug. 21 at Cannon/Concord Academy in Concord.
