Mebane’s city council approved a bid for $800,000 for repaving work, most of which will be dedicated to work on Clay Street.
The resurfacing there is to take place between Second to Fifth streets, as well as on Fourth Street from Clay to Center streets.
This is the remaining work from a major renovation under Clay Street, which has been going on periodically over the past year.
Interim city manager Preston Mitchell said that most of the work would be done at night in order to minimize the disruption to businesses and drivers on Clay Street. However, there is no schedule yet for when the work will begin.
Last fall, the city contracted to have the sanitary sewer and stormwater lines along Clay Street resealed; water lines cleaned and lined with an epoxy; and high-density polyurethane resin was injected under the pavement to fill the voids that were causing the street to sag in places. The city also envisions drainage improvements, installing so-called “bulb-outs” at existing mid-block crosswalks; adding new pavement markings, including the brick-stamped look at intersections, and adding various parking, yield, bicycle, and handicapped space signage.
Additionally, the city will also undertake additional paving at the public works department for about $50,000 (of the $800,000).
Another designation of repaving will be in the Mill Creek subdivision on Mt. Ranier Street, from Everglades Drive to Great Smokey Mountain Drive, and along Corporate Park Drive in the Samet industrial park off South Third Street.
The contract was awarded, unanimously, on a 5-0 vote, to Turner Asphalt GC, LLC of Raleigh; the company was one of only two bidders, and the only one whose submission was not disqualified because of missing information.
