Sarah Vaughan Lacy “MawMaw” Butler

Sarah Vaughan Lacy “MawMaw” Butler, 104, passed away February 6th, 2024 at her home.  She was the wife of the late Rupert Tremain Butler. They shared 62 years of marriage.

Born September 27, 1919 in Halifax County, Virginia she was the daughter of Sallie “Bet” Elizabeth Epps Lacy and William James “Buck” Lacy. She graduated from Halifax High School in 1938. She lettered in basketball and was crowned Miss Halifax in 1938. She attended quilting classes at Alamance Community College from 40 years. She stopped in 2017 at the age of 98.

She was employed for 22 years at Bell’s Department Store, Burlington, NC and worked as a sales clerk until she retired in June 1973.

She was a charter member of Grove Park Baptist Church, Burlington, NC. She belonged to Alamance Piece Makers Guild, Alamance County Home Extension Club, and Tarheel Camping Club. She enjoyed and was known for her quilting and sewing.

She will be remembered for her love for faith, family, friends, and the countless life stories she shared.

She is survived by her son Rupert Maxwell “Max” Butler (Penny), daughter-in-law Connie H Butler (Wayne Lacy Butler-deceased), 4 grandchildren, Yonnie Dean Butler (Judy), Brett Allen Butler (Terra), Stephany Butler Thomas (Scott), Trevor William Butler (Carina), 8 great grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many friends.

She was predeceased by husband Rupert Tremain Butler, son Wayne Lacy Butler (Connie) of Burlington, parents Sallie “Bet” Lacy and William “Buck” Lacy; brothers William James Lacy, Jr. Thomas Bailey Lacy, Daniel Epps Lacy, Charles Claiborne Lacy, and sisters: Ann Elizabeth Lacy, Mary Sue Lacy Elliott.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 9th, 2024 at Rich & Thompson Funeral & Cremation Home, 306 Glenwood Avenue, Burlington, NC.

A graveside service and burial will follow the visitation on Friday, February 9th, 2024 at 2:30 p.m. at Pine Hill Cemetery, 101 E. Summit Avenue, Burlington, NC.
