School board chairman honored during Breast Cancer Awareness month

Alamance-Burlington school board chairman Sandy Ellington-Graves was honored by her fellow board members – and surprised by the attendance of her immediate and extended family who showed up for the board’s meeting Monday night – as a breast cancer survivor.

Shown in the background is her daughter, Katie Graves, and husband Justin Graves, with the yellow roses, who were among the numerous immediate and extended family members that surprised her during a special recognitions period at this week’s school board meeting.

Ellington-Graves underwent a mastectomy in September 2023 shortly after her diagnosis with Stage IA breast cancer, she said at the time. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month.
