Sincere Thompson rushed for 250 yards and two touchdowns as Southern Alamance knocked off host Patrick Henry in high school football Friday night in Roanoke, Virginia.
Southern won 30-28, reversing an outcome from a year ago.
Thompson broke a 15-15 tie with a 14-yard fourth-quarter run and he added the two-point conversion. Patrick Henry matched the touchdown with 5:31 to play, but failed on a two-point conversion pass.
Southern, playing an out-of-state game for the first time on record, stretched the lead on Thompson’s 55-yard run and Chalino Garcia’s extra-point kick.
Patrick Henry quarterback Jake Painter’s 57-yard run with 3:10 left cut into the gap. After the ensuing kick-off, Southern kept possession for the rest of the game.
Southern (2-0) has won both its games on the road. Patrick Henry was in its season opener.
Thompson ran 36 times – accounting for more than half of Southern’s offensive plays from scrimmage.
Camden Whittemore’s 1-yard run came in the first quarter for Southern. The teams were tied 7-7 at the half.
Southern went ahead on quarterback Tustin Johnson’s 1-yard run on the first possession of the third quarter, with Thompson running in the two-point conversion. Patrick Henry used an 84-yard drive that concluded in the fourth quarter to pull even.
Southeast Alamance 48, Seaforth 21: At Haw River, Tyler Jackson threw for four touchdowns and ran for another as Southeast built an early lead in the non-conference home victory.
Joseph Gibbs made two touchdown receptions and ran for one TD. Jatayvion McMillian and Drew Easter also each made a touchdown reception. D.J. Callis ran for a touchdown.
The Stallions (2-0) led 27-0 at halftime. Southeast was up 48-6 before Seaforth (1-1) scored 15 fourth-quarter points.
Western Alamance 28, Southwest Guilford 6: At Elon, the host Warriors scored on a fumble return and a kickoff return to highlight their victory, while Christian Payton rushed for 142 yards.
Linebacker Matthias Satterfield returned a fumble for a touchdown. Kylon Richardson had an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Payton carried 23 times, including for a 1-yard touchdown. Quarterback Grayson Smith also had a 1-yard touchdown run.
Western (2-0) has won two home games.
Southwest Guilford (0-2) was limited to 98 yards of total offense. The Cowboys, who trailed 14-0 at halftime, scored in the third quarter.
Northeast Guilford 36, Eastern Alamance 7: At Mebane, Northeast Guilford set the tone with a couple of long touchdown plays and went on to the road victory.
The Rams scored on two pass plays of about 70 in the first quarter and led the rest of the way in a game that began following a pregame weather-related delay. Tristan Turner threw for one of the touchdowns and he scored on the receiving end of two other big gainers for the Rams.
Northeast Guilford (2-0) was up 14-0 halftime. The Eagles scored on Braxton Ballard’s pass to Devontia Clark.
It was 28-7 going to the fourth quarter, with an Eastern blocked punt resulting in a safety before the Rams tacked on the final touchdown.
Eastern (1-1) lost to the Rams for the second year in a row.
Thomasville 42, Cummings 20: At Burlington, the visiting Bulldogs pulled out the victory to improve to 1-1.
Cummings, which trailed 21-14 at halftime, dropped to 0-2 after falling in its home opener.
Eastern Guilford at Williams – postponed
The matchup has originally been moved to Thursday night at Burlington Memorial Stadium because of concerns regarding Friday’s weather forecast.
Then less than three hours before the scheduled kickoff, an automobile accident involving at least one Williams player resulted in the game being postponed.
Joseph Tang, a Williams player, was listed as the driver in one of the vehicles in a wreck on South Church Street near Country Club Drive. Three other Williams players are listed on the City of Burlington’s accident report.
No make-up date had been announced as of Saturday morning.
