Teen champion golfer honored by city council

Eastern High School’s female golfer phenom, Emily Mathews, was recognized by Mebane’s city council Monday night; mayor Ed Hooks read a resolution of recognition and presented a copy to her, along with a gift bag of golf memorabilia with Mebane city logos.

Mathews, a sophomore at Eastern, won the state championship among 3A schools in May, winning the tournament by seven strokes, the only golfer to shoot under par.

Mathews was present Monday night with her father, Jonathan Mathews, as the council members and audience gave her a standing ovation.
