An 18-year-old male was killed while walking on railroad tracks near Mebane Tuesday afternoon.
The Alamance County sheriff’s office responded at 12:53 p.m. Tuesday to the accident.
The Amtrak train was heading east toward Mebane. The accident occurred right about where the new NC 119 overpass goes over the railroad tracks on the outskirts of Mebane.
Witnesses said the teen’s back was toward the approaching train; he was wearing headphones (not earbuds) and likely did not hear the train, whose engineer continuously sounded the horn to warn of its approach.
The name of the victim is not being released, the sheriff’s office said, until all immediate family members have been notified. No passengers were injured in the collision.
The sheriff’s office is continuing to work with Amtrak, as well as Norfolk & Southern investigators.
