Western grad Taylor Apple starts strong for ECU; Williams’ Ethan George sets Guilford College freshman mark

Freshman pitcher Taylor Apple has made a team-high 10 pitching performances during East Carolina’s stellar start to the softball season.

Apple, who led Western Alamance to last year’s Class 3-A state finals, has racked up a 4-0 record with one complete game for the Pirates (16-2).

Apple posted 39 strikeouts in 36 innings to go with 12 walks. Opponents have batted .148 against her.

Former Western High School softball pitcher Taylor Apple is now at East Carolina University.

Apple’s collegiate debut came with five strikeouts in three innings of shutout relief in East Carolina’s season-opening 11-1 victory against host Charleston Southern. The next day, she picked up her first college victory with four shutout innings in the Pirates’ 13-0 five-inning romp past Cleveland State.

Later in February, Apple made the American Athletic Conference’s weekly honor roll for tossing 10 shutout innings across three games. That included 10 strikeouts with just two hits allowed.


George knocks in 8

Guilford College freshman Ethan George out of Williams set a school freshman record by driving in eight runs in Tuesday’s 23-7 romp past visiting Greensboro College at McBane Field.

George became just the third Guilford College player – and only freshman – with eight RBI in a game in at least 25 years when such records are available.

George, who was playing as a third baseman, went 4-for-6 with his first collegiate home run. He also clubbed two doubles and a single.

His production began with a two-run double in the third inning. His three-run homer and two-run single came in the Quakers’ 10-run fifth inning. He added an RBI double in the seventh.

Guilford improved to 5-6. George has played in six games, batting .571 (12-for-21).
