The only election activity on Tuesday, the second day of filing for 2024 elections, was that two incumbent district court judges – Kathryn Whitaker “Katie” Overby and Larry Brown – filed for re-election.
Overby was appointed to the court in 2011 by then-Governor Beverly Perdue. She won election in 2012 and was re-elected in 2016 and 2020 without opposition.
Brown had been appointed in 2017 by Governor Roy Cooper, first winning election unopposed in 2020.
Both Overby and Brown are Democrats; they registered in Raleigh.
Two other district court seats will be on the 2024 ballot: the seat vacated Friday by district court judge Rick Champion, who had been the county’s only Republican district court judge; and a newly-created fifth district court judgeship that was included in the 2023-2024 budget passed by the General Assembly.
The county’s fourth district court judge, chief district court judge Bradley Reid Allen, Sr., is not up for re-election again until 2026.

The two-week election filing period continues through noon on Friday, December 15.
