Longtime Cummings track and field coach Donnie Davis has been recognized by the National Federation of State High School Associations with a 2022-23 North Carolina Coach of the Year award.
Davis was specifically nominated by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. Recognition for coaches came from leading their sports, shaping their students and contributing in a positive way to their community.
Honorees were based on the 2022-23 school year, community involvement, school involvement, and philosophy of coaching, according to the NFSHSA.
Cavaliers excel in meet
Several Cummings athletes excelled when the Cavaliers took part in their first major indoor track and field competition of the season earlier this month at Lynchburg, Virginia, for the Liberty Flames High School Invitational.
D’Anna Cotton of Cummings won the high jump at 5 feet, 8 inches, the triple jump at 40-½, and the long jump at 18-1½ in the girls’ competition.
Cotton placed second in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.22 seconds.
Brooke Packingham was runner-up to Cotton in the triple jump (37-11¼) and long jump (17-10) and she placed fourth in the 55 hurdles (8.40).
Taylor Jordan was sixth in the triple jump (35-½).
The Cavaliers’ 800 relay of Jordan, Packingham, Honesti Trollinger and Cotton finished fifth in 1:44.77.
Nearly 100 schools from North Carolina, Maryland and Virginia were represented at the meet.
