Southern Alamance was the runner-up in the Class 3-A Mideast Regional for boys’ golf, and the Patriots will join several other Alamance County golfers in next week’s state tournament.
Western Alamance’s Joey Peterson, Eastern Alamance’s Gryffin Brehler, and Williams teammates Tim Klein and Christos Katsoudas were among individual state qualifiers based on Monday’s regional at Highland Country Club in Fayetteville.
Defending state champion Fayetteville Sanford, the host school, was the regional team winner at 279, with Southern at 311 and state qualifier Harnett Central at 330. Williams just missed out on advancing in the team phase at 333, while Eastern was fourth in the 11-team regional with 336.
Peterson shot 1-over-par 73 for fifth place, undone by a double-bogey on his last hole and finishing two strokes behind the co-medalists.
Brehler posted 76, Klein had 79, and Katsoudas turned in 80. There was about a 90-minute weather delay, and Katsoudas had two holes left. He birdied at No. 17 and posted par on the final hole to secure the spot.
Southern was led by Lacy Carroll’s 75, Brody Aydt’s 78, JoJo Gilbert’s 78, and Landon Linch’s 80. Teammate Kader Long’s 86 was dropped from team scoring.
Golfers from the top three teams plus the nine best individual finishers not on those teams qualify for the states. Four golfers tied at 81 for the final three spots, with Jon Pellerito of Williams left out following a playoff.
Scores among other regional entrants: Eastern’s Jason Ball (83), Max Brehler (85), Hayden Whittington (92), and Lance Crespo (93); Western’s Tyler Clayton (84) and Hamilton Plunkett (97); and Williams’ Cole Brinskelle (93) and Ethan Johnson (102).
The Class 3-A state tournament will be held Monday and Tuesday at Longleaf Golf & Family Club in Southern Pines.
In Class 2-A, Southeast Alamance’s Tyler Jones and Joey Pritchard qualified for the Mideast Regional at The Preserve at Jordan Lake in Chapel Hill, but they didn’t advance to states.
