Former Southern Alamance baseball pitcher Drew Siegner entered the college transfer portal, but that didn’t last long.
He’s staying at Campbell.
A coaching change in late June had many of the Camels pondering their futures in recent weeks.
Justin Haire left Campbell after 10 seasons as head coach to become Ohio State’s coach. About a week later, Chris Marx was named the new coach at Campbell.
“I like it there and really there was no reason to leave,” Siegner said. “I like (Marx) a lot and decided to stay.”
About 30 Campbell players were in the portal, though Siegner said that stemmed, in part, because they were advised to explore options during the uncertain period. He said he received some interest from other schools.
“None of us wanted to be stuck in a bad situation,” he said. “Nothing has really changed other than a new coach. I had everything I could ask for.”
Marx had been on Purdue’s coaching staff since 2000, with part of that time as pitching coach. He was a Campbell assistant from 2014-19.
This year for Campbell, Siegner made 23 relief appearances, notching a 3-2 record. His victories came against Bucknell, Valparaiso, and North Carolina State.
After dealing with a late-season elbow strain, Siegner has taken the summer off to rehab the ailment.
Siegner, who turns 21 in September, will be a redshirt sophomore in 2025 with three years of eligibility remaining. He said he expects his role to remain out of the bullpen.
“Everybody wants to start,” he said. “As long as I’m pitching, I’m happy.”
Poteat stays put
Virginia Tech’s Mylyjael Poteat, a former Clover Garden and TBS player, entered the transfer portal shortly after the team’s season ended.
But by the end of March, he announced that he would stay with the Hokies. He’ll be in his fifth college season after beginning his career with two seasons at Rice.
Poteat, a 6-foot-9 power forward, averaged 6.4 points and 3.5 rebounds per game off the Virginia Tech bench in 2023-24. He made 64.4 percent of his shots from the field. He was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference academic team honoree.
