Southern Alamance’s girls’ golf team placed third in the Class 3-A state tournament, and Williams golfer Gabriella Moorehead claimed third in the individual competition Monday and Tuesday at Longleaf Golf & Family Club in Southern Pines.
Southern Alamance was in third place five strokes out of the lead after the first day and held that position among the 11 scoring teams.South Point was the winner at 510, overcoming first-round leader Lake Norman Charter (511). Southern Alamance finished at 518, which was six strokes better than fourth-place Croatan.
Among individual scores, Eva Robinson (83, 84) led Southern Alamance in 12th place at 167. Riley Bush (86, 86) tied for 19th at 173, Madison Kingery (91, 91), and Sydney Crawford (95, 87) were among those tied for 35th at 182, and Abby Hunt (110, 112) was 86th.
Moorehead, a sophomore, shot rounds of 81 and 73 for a 13-over-par 157. She ended up one spot better in the standings than last week’s finish in the Central Regional.
Jacksonville’s Sanaa Carter, who was a three-time state runner-up, won the title at 3-over 147, followed by Hibriten’s Trinity White at 153.
Moorehead’s second-round score was the best of any of the 94 entrants. Only six golfers were below 80 for the round.
Western Alamance’s Ashtyn Whitfield (86, 95) had a share of 32nd place at 181. Caroline Conner (101, 103) of Williams ended up 76th at 204.
- In the Class 2-A state tournament at Sapona Golf Club in Lexington, Southeast Alamance’s Sophia Hulslander tied for 61st place at 210 with a pair of 105 rounds.
