Catherine Parker, a North Carolina School of Science and Math runner from Mebane, was the Class 2-A state champion in girls’ cross country.
Parker, a former Eastern Alamance athlete, ran 3.1 miles in 18 minutes, 42.38 seconds Saturday at Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville, giving her about a 52-second margin on teammate Moira Furr, who was the runner-up. NCSSM won the team state title.
Southeast Alamance’s Madolyn Grubb placed 69th in 22:41.98 and teammates Elise Westbrook (80th in 23:06.68) and Lillian Percy (83rd in 123:20.49).
- In Class 2-A boys, Neil Edwards of Southeast Alamance placed 62nd in 18:20.94.
Jack Anstrom of team runner-up Seaforth was the individual champion in 15:52.89. Brevard won the team title.
- In Class 3-A boys, Freeman Easton of Williams ended up 34th in 17:08.43, while Max Thomas of the Bulldogs was 50th (17:25.38).
Orange won the team championship, led by Myles Jermyn in sixth place (15:56.06) and Cyrus Neal in 12th place (16:29.13).
- For Class 3-A girls, Ava Childress of Williams was 44th in 20:57.30.
Boys’ soccer
Seedings and pairings for the state playoffs come out Thursday (today), with first-round games Saturday, the second round Tuesday and the third round next Thursday. It takes six victories to capture a state title.
Williams will enter the Class 3-A postseason on a five-game winning streak after winning 4-0 in Monday’s non-conference game at Northwood as Aurelio Figueroa scored two goals.
Girls’ tennis
Williams made it through three rounds of the Class 3-A dual team state playoffs before falling in the regional semifinals at fourth-seeded Fayetteville Sanford last week. The eighth-seeded Bulldogs had defeated Smithfield-Selma, Union Pines and top-seeded Wilson Fike.
The dual team state finals for all four classifications will be held Saturday at Burlington Tennis Center.
Class 2-A (Research Triangle vs. Hendersonville or Pine Lake Prep) and Class 4-A (Cardinal Gibbons vs. Charlotte Providence or Myers Park) are set for 9:30 a.m., with Class 1-A (Roxboro Community School vs. Bishop McGuinness or Mt. Airy) and Class 3-A (Fayetteville Sanford vs. Lake Norman Charter or East Lincoln) at 12:30 p.m.
Volleyball
McMichael defeated Mid-Carolina Conference member Seaforth in five sets to win the Class 2-A state championship Saturday at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh.
Other state champions were Cardinal Gibbons (Class 4-A), West Henderson (Class 3-A) and defending champion Polk County (Class 1-A).
