Nick Mathews of Mebane tied for the top spot in a U.S. Open local qualifier this month at Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh.
Competing on his home North Carolina State course, he was one of five golfers out of 84 to advance to the next stage of qualifying. Matthews, an Eastern Alamance graduate, shot 3-under-par 68, a score also posted by Stephen Franken of Raleigh.
Final qualifying takes place next week. The U.S. Open is scheduled for June 12-15 at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pennsylvania.
- Kyle Moffett of Burlington shot 11-over 82 in a U.S. Open local qualifier in late April at Pinehurst No. 6. He didn’t advance.
College results
The college season ended for Mathews in the NCAA regional this month at Atkins Golf Course in Urbana, Ill. Mathews tied for 53rd place at 9-over 222 (71, 76, 75), second among N.C. State golfers, but the Wolfpack was last among 13 teams.
In last month’s Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament at Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Mathews had N.C. State’s best finish at fifth place. He was 6-under 210 (70, 68, 72) for three rounds.
- Emily Mathews, younger sister of Nick, finished her college season for Virginia Tech at Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club in Gold Canyon, Arizona. She tied for 51st place at 15 over 231 (80, 77, 74).
The Hokies were ninth in the team standings, failing to advance.
In April’s ACC Tournament at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, Mathews tied for 16th place at 3-over 219 (76, 71, 72).
Other spring results
Jeffrey Lankford of Mocksville was the winner at 4-under 209 after rounds of 72, 66 and 71 in the North Carolina Senior Amateur earlier this month at Country Club of Salisbury. Paul Jett of Southern Pines, Jay Barnes of Charlotte, and Jonathan Sielsky of Huntersville tied for second at 1 over.
Greg Seelinger of Burlington tied for 20th at 7 over with rounds of 69, 74 and 77. Burlington’s Craig Cathey tied for 27th at 9 over (75, 74, 74). Liberty’s Steve Kidd finished at 13 over (76, 73, 77) tied for 37th.
Graham’s Mike Roshelli missed the cut at 20 over through two rounds (86, 76).
- Brett McLamb shot 4-under 209 for three rounds and defeated Lexington, S.C.’s Zachary Herold on the first playoff hole of the Carolinas Mid-Amateur in April at Waynesville Inn & Golf Club. Burlington’s Wade Boteler tied for 54th at 14-over 227. He shot rounds of 76, 71, 80.
