Stacey Palmore, who had been on the Elon men’s basketball staff for the past three seasons, died unexpectedly June 4.
Palmore, 56, had been with the Phoenix since 2022 after the hiring of Billy Taylor as head coach. He has been director of scouting and recruiting operations.
“Stacey was a colleague and a friend for over 25 years, dating back to our time as assistant coaches in the Southern Conference,” Taylor said in a statement from the university. “I am heartbroken for his son Jaden, his family, and our Elon basketball family.”
A cause of death has not been revealed, though an obituary states that he died at High Point Medical Center.
Tributes from around college basketball piled up in honor of Palmore in the hours after his death was announced.
He spent time on coaching staffs at USC Upstate, Coastal Carolina, Georgia, Virginia Tech, College of Charleston, Evansville, Western Carolina, Lander, and Erskine. He played basketball and golf at Livingstone College.
Elon athletics director Jenn Strawley said that Palmore “poured himself into our student-athletes. He left an incredible imprint on the Elon community and on college basketball.”
A funeral is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Friday at Blyth Funeral Home’s chapel in Greenwood, South Carolina, followed by burial at Oakbrook Memorial Park in Hodges, South Carolina.
His son, Jaden Palmore, played boys’ basketball in high school for Greensboro Day School, where he was a senior during the past season. He’s committed to play collegiately for the University of Lynchburg.
