The Western Alamance boys’ soccer team, which captured the 2024 state championship in Class 3-A, begins the new season Monday night at Durham School of the Arts.
The Warriors’ second game doesn’t come until August 20 with the home opener vs. Seaforth.
Western doesn’t have a scheduled game against Asheboro, which handed the Warriors their only loss last year in a non-conference meeting and then lost to Western in the state championship game. However, the Warriors are set for a road non-conference matchup with Southwestern Randolph, which was the Class 2-A state runner-up last season, in a September 3 game.
New coaches at Southern
Southern Alamance alum Tracy Herring is returning to the school as volleyball coach.
Herring had been a physical education teacher at Graham, where she held roles as volleyball and girls’ basketball coach in some recent years, while filling for a season as girls’ soccer coach as well. She also had a prior stint as a Graham coach in the mid-1990s.
She has been on Southern’s coaching staffs previously as an assistant coach and junior varsity coach.
As a student at Southern, Herring was a three-sport participant, including a role on a state-championship softball team. That team was inducted into Southern’s Athletics Hall of Fame.
Herring played volleyball and softball collegiately at Elon.
For boys’ soccer, Arthur Quartararo is the new coach at Southern. He’s the sixth coach for the Patriots in a seven-season stretch.
Quartararo’s coaching background includes time as an assistant coach for the East Chapel Hill boys’ and girls’ teams. He works as an information technology specialist for Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools.
More soccer coaching updates
Former Cedar Ridge coach Chauncey Brummell is the new boys’ soccer coach at Southeast Alamance.
Cedar Ridge recorded one winning record in the past four seasons under Brummell. That came in 2023 when the Red Wolves finished second in the Central 3-A Conference.
Jason Brinker takes over as boys’ soccer coach at Eastern Alamance. He had been an assistant coach for the Eagles, taking over head coaching duties during the 2024 season when Larry Malone exited the position. The Eagles were 3-15-1 last year.
Brinker’s daughter, Eastern alum Abby Brinker, is a freshman on the Elon women’s soccer team.
Eastern’s first game is set for Monday against visiting Cedar Ridge.
Southeast has new volleyball coach
Melissa Troy is the new volleyball coach at Southeast.
She coached the past three years in Maryland at Manchester Valley, where her last team registered a 12-5 record.
