A Mebane resident faces numerous criminal charges after he allegedly forced a man to give up his car keys at gunpoint following a “minor” car accident in the northern part of the county.
Lindsay Lee Massey, Jr. was ultimately taken into custody in the wake of this two-vehicle crash, which occurred near the juncture of McCray Road and NC 49 on the evening of December 14.
According to the office of Alamance County’s sheriff, Massey was a passenger in one of the two vehicles, which was rear ended as it pulled out of a convenience store parking lot. The driver of the second car later told deputies that the first vehicle’s maneuvers had been so abrupt that he had to slam on his brakes just to avoid a serious collision. All the same, Massey was apparently in no mind to let the matter go with a simple exchange of insurance information.
According to the sheriff’s office, the 26-year-old black male, who hails from 301 West Washington Street in Mebane, leapt out of the first vehicle and pulled out a Glock 43X handgun, which investigators later discovered was stolen, and demanded the driver’s car keys. He allegedly went on to fire a shot into the second vehicle’s fender before he returned to the first vehicle’s passenger seat with the other driver’s car keys in hand.
Deputies subsequently tracked Massey down to an address along Saconn Drive in Burlington. Once there, they arrested the 26-year-old for the felony-level crimes of robbery with a dangerous weapon, the possession of a stolen firearm, the illegal possession of a gun by a previously convicted felon, and firing into an occupied vehicle, along with the misdemeanor offense of assault by pointing a gun.
Court records indicate that Massey’s arrest wasn’t entirely without incident. According to a supplemental arrest warrant, the defendant “refused to let deputies detain him” and went so far as to use his own daughter, who is under 16, “as a shield.”
“Once the child was removed from his grip,” the arrest warrant adds, “he refused to place his hands behind his back until physically forced to by deputies.”
As a result of these alleged actions, the sheriff’s office has gone on to charge Massey with misdemeanor child abuse and resisting a public officer, which is also a misdemeanor-level offense.
In the wake of this arrest, the sheriff’s office has also filed two felony charges against Massey’s mother – Nina Snipes Womack – for allegedly trying to cover up her son’s indiscretions.
According to the sheriff’s office, Womack relieved her son of the pilfered car keys as well as the stolen handgun when he dropped by her home at 740 Ivey Road in Graham shortly after the car crash.
“Womack allegedly returned the keys to the scene of the accident,” the sheriff’s office went on to note in a subsequent statement, “and placed them inconspicuously into the debris from the wreck.”
Once the sheriff’s investigators had winkled out this apparent deception, they charged the 43-year-old black female as an accessory after the fact in Massey’s armed robbery.
They’ve also charged her with an additional felony for obstruction of justice.
According to the sheriff’s office, Womack has been placed under a $50,000 bond since her arrest. Massey, meanwhile, has been detained without bond.
