Graham resident Randy Scott had a topic for a book about three decades ago. He finally got around to publishing it.
While his background is largely in tennis, he said the book reflects on sports as a whole.
“It’s beyond tennis,” said Scott, who’s director of tennis at the Burlington Tennis Center. “It was written for players, parents, and coaches.”
The Inner Way of Tennis, Sport & Life is meant to provide a deeper look at what Scott said might commonly been referred to as “the mental game” in sports. The publication’s subtitle is “Playing the Game from Inside Out.”
It’s considered a guidebook in what the author hopes will lead to more enjoyment for participants.
As sports have evolved, Scott said there’s so much missing from what once was considered the core of participation and competition.
“We’ve kind of lost perspective on just playing,” he said.
Scott, 58, spent about 30 years overseas as a tennis instructor. During that time, his experiences led to the foundation for much of what’s contained in the self-published book.
“It goes into a lot of my experiences in Asia,” he said.
The Burlington native has had an array of tennis experiences, including time as a player at then-Elon College. He has been with Burlington Tennis Center since December 2020.
“Once of the things I’ve noticed over the years, there’s a need for a re-look at what a competition means,” he said. “What is it actually teaching? How do we address this?”
Scott said he feels that there’s a need to develop the attitude of parents and how they approach sports, both in regard to directing their children in athletics and in their relationships with coaches.
Within the 116-page book, Scott provides lists on certain topics. They’re directed specifically for players, parents, and coaches.
