After time away from school jobs, Kenroy Wallace wants to make a difference as the new athletics director at Graham High School.
Wallace has been hired to fill a vacancy and he begins in that role July 1.
He has relocated from Philadelphia, liking the opportunity he found at Graham.
“This is me getting reacclimated to education,” Wallace said. “I’ve missed the hustle and bustle, and I missed the athletics.”
Wallace, 48, fills a position that has been held by Kyle Ward, a Graham alum who retires at the end of the month. Ward was AD at Graham for six years after eight years as an assistant AD and spent 29 years in coaching roles at Graham, though the first five of those he was teaching at Graham Middle School. Ward, who also was a physical education teacher, has been campaigning for a position on the Alamance-Burlington School System’s Board of Education.
Wallace will teach physical education classes at Graham. Since moving to Whitsett about a year ago, he worked remotely in health care.
“I was looking to find athletics that were close to me and I could get involved and make a difference,” he said. “This has lit the fire again.”
He spent about a decade as a track and field coach at St. Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia. He also has background as a middle school athletics director. He has ties to the track and field coaching staff at Greensboro Page.
Graham teams have been challenged by redistricting and conference realignment. Wallace said he wants to make sure Red Devils coaches are best equipped to be successful.
At least initially, Wallace said he doesn’t have plans to coach at Graham.
He attended spring athletics director meetings in Alamance County and has met staff at Graham.
Wallace is a graduate of Lincoln University in Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in health science. He has pre-high school age children who attend schools in the Eastern Guilford district.
