BREAKING MON. NIGHT: Alamance County commissioners vote unanimously for one year moratorium on data centers

After hearing from more than three dozen residents – most opposed to allowing data centers in the county and many asking for a two-year moratorium on such facilities  – Alamance County’s commissioners unanimously adopted instead a one-year moratorium.

The commissioners want to allow themselves “breathing room” to study and make any necessary changes in their development rules in order to address the potential for new regulations that would govern the county’s parameters for a potential data center.

The county attorney, Rik Stevens, had drafted a potential motion for a six months moratorium, but the commissioners decided to make the time period longer, for a full year.

The second floor courtroom of the Historic Court House was packed with residents, many of whom voiced their concerns during a more than three-hour public hearing.
