Steel fence now surrounds Confederate monument in Graham

Workmen spent Monday and Tuesday on the installation of a steel fence around the Confederate monument on the north side of the Historic Court House.

The county authorized the 8-foot tall fence to replace the portable barricades that it has used to protect the century-old monument from would-be vandals, including any who show up as protesters. The city’s historic resources commission also okayed the design.

The monument has become a focal point of protests since the death of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis in May 2020.
