
The city of Burlington announced this week that Gary Smith has been appointed public works director for the city, effective Monday, April 26.
Smith is local to Alamance County and brings over 30 years of public works leadership experience including department head and division head roles with the cities of High Point and Greensboro.
According to the city of Burlington, Smith’s latest position was as a department head in charge of equipment services for the city of Greensboro.
Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
He has been very active with the North Carolina American Public Works Association (APWA) where he has served as President for the State Chapter, the Facilities & Grounds Division as well as the Equipment Services Division.
He has also received numerous recognitions in his career such as National APWA Professional Manager of the Year in Public Fleet and NC APWA Employee of the Year.
