The Mathews siblings from Mebane have been in a couple of notable recent college golf tournaments.
Eastern Alamance alum Emily Mathews was on a record-setting winning team for Virginia Tech in women’s golf.
The Hokies won last week’s Ironwood Invitational at Ironwood Golf and Country Club in Greenville, marking the first time in school history the team claimed two tournament titles in the same season.
Mathews tied for 36th with rounds of 78, 70, and 83 on the par-72 layout.
Virginia Tech won with a three-round total of 11-over 875. East Carolina (881), North Carolina State (898), UNC Greensboro (902), and Stetson (909) rounded out the top five in the 16-team field. Elon placed sixth with 910, led by Ashley Lafontaine, who tied for 20th at 226.
N.C. State’s Marie Madsen was medalist at 6-under 210.
- Nick Mathews of N.C. State’s men’s team won a singles match in Tuesday’s Bush Cup match play at Old Chatham Golf Club. The Wolfpack defeated Army 8½-3½. Matthews defeated Dragon Theam by 7 and 6.
Last month, Matthews had a three-round total of 7-under 209 to tie for 13th place in the Hootie Intercollegiate at Awendaw, South Carolina. Mathews had rounds of 72, 70 and 67. Purdue and South Carolina tied for team honors at 834, with Elon placing seventh and N.C. State tied for 10th.
