Mark King hit a grand slam and pitched a complete game as Southern Alamance defeated host Orange 4-0 on Tuesday night.
The outcome improved the first-place Patriots to 7-0 in the Central 3-A Conference.
King’s blast came in the sixth inning. He struck out seven batters. The rematch with Orange is Friday night at home.
Last Friday’s 5-3 road victory at Roxboro Person came with Southern pitchers Nathan McNeal and Eli Gilley combining to strike out 11 batters. The Patriots broke a tie with two runs in the seventh.
- Eastern Alamance had an eight-game winning streak end with Tuesday night’s 7-6 loss to Roxboro Person. Tyler Westbrooks scored two runs for the Eagles, whose pitchers issued 14 walks.
Conner Horner drove in three runs when Eastern won 9-8 at Williams last Friday. James Wellons was the winning pitcher.
- Western Alamance’s winning streak reached four games with Tuesday night’s 6-5 Central 3-A Conference victory at Cedar Ridge.
- Southeast Alamance’s first blemish in the Mid-Carolina Conference came with Tuesday night’s 10-0 loss at Seaforth. The Stallions had won their first 10 league games, including 14-0 vs. visiting Bartlett Yancey on Friday.
- Anthony Valdez drove in three runs and Davis Phillips scored three runs as Burlington Christian Academy defeated host Greensboro Page 8-1 last week.
Pitcher Will Grubb struck out seven without allowing an earned run in five innings as the Royals improved to 11-2.
Girls’ soccer
Western Alamance improved to 10-0 with last week’s 5-0 victory at Williams. Callie Athas had three goals and Kennedy Vaughn and Cana Kaffenberger had the other two in the Central 3-A Conference game.
- Abby Brinker notched four goals and two assists in Eastern Alamance’s 9-0 home victory against Roxboro Person on Tuesday night. The Eagles were coming off a 0-0 non-league tie at Northern Guilford on Friday and last Thursday’s 6-0 home triumph against Williams.
- Southern Alamance topped host Roxboro Person 6-0 last Thursday with two goals apiece from Callie Cross and Cayla Shaw.
- Southeast Alamance ended last week on a four-game winning streak, capped by at 7-0 victory at North Moore in the Mid-Carolina Conference.
Boys’ lacrosse
Southern Alamance’s five-game winning streak ended with Tuesday night’s 12-4 loss at Orange.
Southern, which has compiled a school-record 12 wins, was coming off Friday night’s 16-7 road victory at Western Alamance, which received six goals and one assist from Corben Bowen.
Williams, which hasn’t played this month, will visit Southern on Friday night.
- Western stopped Eastern Alamance’s two-game winning streak with Tuesday night’s 13-3 home victory.
- Eastern’s 11-10 escape last week at Southeast Alamance came with five goals from Jacob Mueller and three goals and two assists from Dylan Uptain. For Southeast, Aiden Greene poured in six goals and Anthony Biondo and Zackary Pisani both scored two goals.
Eastern’s 16-7 road victory against Roxboro Community came with Mueller’s five goals and Nathan Robinson’s four goals and six assists.
Track and field
Junior D’Anna Cotton set Cummings records in the long jump and 300-meter hurdles in Saturday’s Panther Invitational at Greensboro Dudley.
Cotton’s long jump went 20 feet, ½-inch. Her time in the hurdles was 41.95 seconds. She also won the triple jump in 39-11¾.
Brooke Packingham of Cummings was third in the long jump at 17-7½ and Kaili Payne was sixth at 17-4. In the triple jump, Cummings’ Diamond Moore was third at 35-5¼.
In the hurdles, teammates Payne (44.64), Packingham (45.05), and Honesti Trollinger (47.23) were fourth, fifth and seventh.
Cotton finished third in the 100 hurdles in 14.27 and Payne was sixth in 14.86.
Janay Pegram of Southeast Alamance placed eighth in the 200 in 24.79.
In boys’ competition, Southeast’s Marquis Burnette won the 100 in 10.66 seconds.
