Rezoning would make way for new Biscuitville

Rezoning for 1700 South Church Street in Burlington, the home of a Biscuitville restaurant, could be the preface to tearing down that location and rebuilding a new Biscuitville.

That’s what Burlington’s planning and zoning commission was told Monday night prior to unanimously granting the requested rezoning.

The current location has a more restrictive form of business zoning – conditional and neighborhood business zoning – than the more general business rezoning requested by the company.

The company’s representatives, Jessie Lester and Harrell Queen, explained that Biscuitville wants to shore up its zoning prior to undertaking the demolition and rebuilding at the current site.

Queen said the new building will be similar to the new style of restaurant that Biscuitville has been building, citing the company’s new Graham store as an example of what will probably be built on South Church Street in Burlington.

The new Burlington location at 1700 South Church Street will be similar in style to the company’s redesigned style as at its South Main Street location in Graham (shown here).

The existing building, an octagonal building originally built about 50 years ago for Northwestern Bank, will be razed, with a new building constructed, probably in 2022, Queen estimated.

The planning and zoning commission voted unanimously to recommend to the city council that the 1.1-acre site be rezoned for general business. The meeting was held by the Zoom teleconferencing platform due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The Biscuitville request is the latest in a series of new construction planned for various restaurant sites in Burlington.
