It didn’t take long for Tony McCants to find another job as a head coach for a high school football team.
Following one season at Southern Alamance, McCants was hired this month as Eden Morehead’s next coach.
McCants resigned as coach at Southern in January, citing the distance from his Stokesdale home. Now, he’ll be much closer to home in his next coaching role, something he said he’s excited about.
Eden Morehead had a vacancy with the departure of Bobby Martin after two seasons. The Panthers were 0-10 and 2-9 under Martin, giving them six consecutive losing seasons.
Southern was 7-4 last year with McCants, who had been at McMichael for four seasons before his one-season stopover with the Patriots.
He remains in a teaching position at Southern, potentially through the end of the school year.
In May, McCants will be conducting spring football workouts at Eden Morehead.
McCants’s Eden Morehead team will have a 2025 matchup with Cummings as part of its four-game non-league slate.
Southern has had a vacancy for more than two months. A round of interviews has taken place, and some second interviews have been scheduled.
Other schools in the region – such as Montgomery Central, Randleman, Southwest Guilford, Trinity and Eden Morehead – with football coaching changes during the past few months have had vacancies filled in quicker fashions than Southern.
