Basketball games scheduled for this past Friday night at Cummings were called off because of security concerns.
Roxboro Person was supposed to visit Cummings for girls’ and boys’ games in the Mid-Carolina Conference.
The Burlington Police Department became involved and removed a student from the Cummings campus earlier in the day after school officials learned that a student might be possessing weapons. No injuries were reported, and school officials have termed it now in law enforcement’s hands.
There were also reports of online chatter from earlier in the day that apparently perked concerns. Notification of the games being nixed came Friday afternoon.
No specific connections were made to a postgame football brawl that took place between members of the Roxboro Person and Cummings teams in October. That resulted in a significant police response and arrests.
As of Tuesday, no make-up date for the basketball games had been set. The schools are scheduled to meet in girls’ and boys’ basketball February 3 in Roxboro.
Western Alamance visited Cummings on Tuesday night for girls’ and boys’ games without incident. There were four law enforcement vehicles – three from the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office, one from Burlington Police – stationed near the main entrance prior to the games.

The annual one-day showcase again will be held on Martin Luther King Day at Southern Alamance, with a junior varsity boys’ game (Vance County vs. Southern Alamance) followed by six varsity matchups.
Four schools from Alamance County will take part Monday.
At 11:30 a.m., River Mill meets Vance County in a girls’ game, followed by Cummings’ boys vs. Vance County at 1:00 p.m. Cummings is replacing Graham in the lineup.
The Williams girls face Winston-Salem Reynolds at 2:30, with the Williams boys taking on South Granville at 4:00 p.m.
Southern’s girls meet North Carolina School of Science and Math at 5:30 p.m., with a boys’ game between the schools to follow at approximately 7:00 p.m.
Schedule note
The first meetings of the season between The Burlington School and Burlington Christian Academy – girls (5:00 p.m.) and boys (6:45 p.m.) – are scheduled for Friday night at BCA.
