PUBLIC NOTICE
On behalf of the U.S. Army Environmental Command (USAEC), Cherokee Nation Environmental Solutions (CNES),along with ContiFederal Services (CFS),have been contracted to provide an updated Community Involvement Plan (CIP) for the former Tarheel Army Missile Plant (TAMP). The Army is asking for the public’s input in the development of the Western Electric (TAMP) CIP as required by the Environmental Restoration Program.
Communication has evolved. USAEC would like to know how to get information to members of the community so that the public has an active voice in the environmental actions associated with the former plant. Army contractors are interested in interviewing people like you to identify your concerns, preferred communication methods, and desired involvement levels in the Army cleanup process at Western Electric (TAMP).Your answers to the interview questions will be incorporated anonymously into the CIP.
Your opinion matters. Please reach out to this contact if you’re interested and to get more information: Carla Avery at (848)-327-4448 or cavery@contifederal.com. Interviews can be completed via phone, email, or through online communication such as MS Teams through November 8, 2024. Accommodations for disabilities or translation services will be provided upon request.
The property formerly known as both the Western Electric Site and Tarheel Army Missile Plant has a long history from fabric to electronic components manufacturing with operations occurring from 1927-2002. In 2003 a Finding of Suitability for Early Transfer (FOSET) was completed and signed by key stakeholders from the State, Army, County, and City. This allowed the property to be sold for private use through the General Service Administration (GSA). In 2016 the Army began a remedial investigation to address TCE contamination. The Army completed that investigation with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) in 2022 and is currently working on a feasibility study and remedial design to address the TCE in the groundwater.
