Driver crashes into deputy’s patrol car while being pursued by another deputy

A fleeing motorist emerged unscathed, but not quite scot-free, after he crashed his car into a deputy’s vehicle in an alleged attempt to evade other sheriff’s deputies.

Alex Gonzalez was ultimately hauled off in handcuffs after the high-speed pursuit, which swept through a few blocks of east Burlington before its ignominious conclusion on Monday afternoon.

According to the office of Alamance County’s sheriff, deputies initially tried to pull over Gonzalez when they noticed a fictitious license plate on his car as he headed east on North Church Street.

A 22-year-old white male of 213 Robin Lane in Graham, Gonzalez allegedly gunned his accelerator when the deputies activated their blue lights and sirens. He then led his pursuers on a brief chase along Sellars Mill Road, which ended when Gonzalez careened through a stop sign at the intersection of Hyde Street and plowed into one of the sheriff’s specialized K9 vehicles.

According to the sheriff’s office, the agency’s vehicle suffered serious damage when it flipped over in the collision. Even so, the deputy and his canine partner both came out of the wreck without major injuries. The sheriffs office also reported no injuries for Gonzalez or either of the two passengers who he whisked along on the chase.

The sheriff’s office has gone on to file a whole slate of charges against Gonzalez, including one felony count of fleeing to elude arrest and two misdemeanor counts of assault on an officer. Gonzalez also faces an open container violation and charges for failing to stop at a stop sign, driving without an operator’s license, and failing to have proper liability insurance for his vehicle.

Gonzalez has been jailed under a $55,500 bond since his arrest.
